Interestingly, in spite of the book's title, "The Laughung Hippopotamus" and "The Mandarin and the Butterfly" take place in Africa and China, respectively. I have been a Mary Murphy fan for a long time, because as a story time leader, she makes my job so much easier. It is longer than many children's books, but keeps up the pace with twists and turns through elements of all your favorite fairy tales. Tim [Susanin] has done an amazing job of chronicling the lives of the people in that period who affected Dad's life. Also, I found the paperback to be of very high quality. I recommend this book to anyone who likes gothic horror novels, especially about vampires which are vampires, and not unfortunate folk condemned to an appetite for blood and the nocturnal restrictions and alienation the come with it. This sets up the rest of the series so well in a very simplistic way.

Helped along by Vulliamy's affectionate (and extremely learned) commentary, the book gradually resolves itself into the quest the subtitle suggests. Chris Tonelli divides sentiment from the sentimental in works like "Poem" and Jim Kroger rounds out this group in providing lascivious levity with "The Quilt". They will—with gusto. I used to work with Mr. Metavista, they suggest, is the dawning age of imagination. The book itself is well-written and articulate as far as it goes. Only part that wasn't really realistic was he never stopped for food with all that work all those hours he would have needed to eat to keep up his energy to do so.
